Thirty Seconds To Mars – Love Lust faith + dreams
Posted by Nicolas Keshvary on 26 mai 2013 in Chroniques | ∞

Note : 4/5

Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams by 30 Seconds to Mars

Meh. I’m increasingly of the belief that acts like 30 Seconds to Mars and their associated contemporaries have a certain invisible creative ceiling which they stand little chance of surpassing, regardless of the dedicated amounts of effort they put in. Which still wouldn’t worry me if I was Jared Leto and his troops, seeing the vast commercial success of the electronically tinged predecessor that was This is War from ’09, but a follow-up like this one – Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams as they’ve decided to call it – engineered to sound grandiose and epic and all that, merely contributes to a steeper, harder fall from grace than they deserve.

DATE OF RELEASE:

SINGLES:
Up in the Air

To be awfully blunt, the band were always setting themselves up for a humongous failure with this release, and that’s even after discounting the critical acclaim that This is War received. Interviews indicated that the content was full of deep context and significance, the titles on the cover were all in UPPERCASE and lead single Up in the Air was literally sent into space, the first ever commercial copy of music to make it up there. The resultant, inevitable crash was always going to be deafening. I mean, there are ways to script a good electronically influenced, hard-rock album. But this is not it.

The problem in isolation with this record is that the band have decided to veer into a path of desperate experimentation whereas none was necessary. The loose, space-rock theme from their debut of a decade ago was very well defined and could have carried them through a satisfying career. Instead, they’ve decided to splurge on pointless electronica and synths which are collectively ruining their overall signature sound they started off with, and are contributing to this current artistic downslide they’re experiencing.

I mean, it’s a neat gesture and all that – to have your fans involved in the creation of the music, but when nearly every track features gang chants and choruses, you have to question the worth of such a call. And tracks that aren’t adulterated in such a fashion like End of All Days at #6 feature a rather cringeworthy attempt by Leto at soulful vocals. Doesn’t work.

Birth is an ineffective opener by itself, but the succeeding couple of tracks are a neat enough listen in comparison to the rest of the album and in hindsight; Conquistador briefly crackles with life but the constant ‘woah-oh’ chants grow tiresome, and unfortunately set the precedent for the rest of the record. Up in the Air pursues its Brit-rock stomp but thus concludes the highlights. Always a bad sign when the flakes are packed over at the front-end of the tracklisting.

I suppose Convergence in the thankful vicinity of the close deserves a shout too, but it’s an interlude at best. Bottomline being, this band have to go back to a blank slate and start over. The last thing we rock fans would like to endure is one tepid affair after another, and especially not from an act which showed such immense potential with their self-titled debut from 2002. Yep, it’s time for a re-launch with these blokes.

Chronique : Thirty Seconds To Mars - LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS

30 Seconds To Mars - Love Lust Faith + Dreams
May 21, 2013 by Dan Slessor

With 2009’s This Is War, 30 Seconds To Mars released their finest work, a towering, anthemic album on a vast scale, and it was well suited to the larger venues they made the jump to. It would have been hard for anyone to make a record bigger than that, and with Love Lust Faith + Dreams they appear to have instead pulled back and made something that is a little more compact and intimate. This does not mean they have gone lo-fi, and they maintain their signature sound throughout. But, with shorter songs and more restrained production it lacks the epic quality of its predecessor, and overall it is weaker for it.

A handful of great songs do stand out. “City Of Angels” is compelling from start to finish, building from ethereal beginnings to an enormous, drum-heavy climax, and “The Race” has a jittery edginess to it that is a perfect counterpoint to its throbbing chorus. The best are “Bright Lights” and “Do Or Die,” which see 30STM exercise their capacity for writing titanic choruses full of sweeping drama in a manner that is almost untouchable. However, a few tracks do fall flat, the Muse-esque “Conquistador” and single “Up In The Air” sounding just too easy for Jared Leto & Co., and the largely instrumental “Pyres Of Varanasi” and brief “Convergence” come across as filler.

As with all of their output to date, one major sticking point 30 Seconds To Mars will always face in the eyes of their detractors is that it can be hard to emotionally invest in their songs. They are almost too polished, too perfect a construct of what an arena-rock band should be, and frontman Jared Leto might be the real deal or he might be playing "rock star." When their songs are as engaging as on This Is War, this is very much pushed to the background, but for all its good qualities, Love Lust Faith + Dreams just doesn’t quite have the strength to all the way distract from these potential shortcomings. Maybe next time they’ll return to the bigger is better ethos that has served them so well in past, and drown out everyone who says otherwise.

Autrement, «Up in the Air» retient notre attention par ses «Oh! Oh! Oh!… Oh!

Citation :

What makes 30 Seconds To Mars so remarkable as a band is their seeming dedication to be consistently worse with each release. Since their debut album in 2002, the band's journey has taken them from fantastic, to great, to average, and finally to bad, which is the point at which we arrive with Love Lust Faith + Dreams. Considering the band's steady decline in quality since their inception, the trio's fourth studio effort wasn't exactly highly anticipated by the music community (outside of their dedicated fanbase that is), and this is hardly a problem that was alleviated by the band's decision to release the two most cringe-worthy songs from the album as singles. However, in total, Love Lust Faith + Dreams is less completely awful and more simply boring.

The problem with the band's current music is their "willingness" (read arrogant determination) to experiment where no experimentation is necessary. Leto and co.'s first stellar album relied on a perfectly sound space-rock theme which produced some killer tunes and could have easily carried them through a satisfying career. However, their decision to switch to synthesisers and screaming was what set them on the downhill slide that they've been enjoying ever since. I suppose you can at least respect the band for trying out different ideas, and for the most part said ideas aren't bad in the first place, just executed horribly. Take, for example, the gang-vocals performed by fans of the band that appeared on This is War. Getting the fans involved in the music and making the process more interactive is a great idea; however, loading up every single song, even acoustics (100 Suns) with enough gang shouting for a Wonder Years song is not. Love Lust Faith + Dreams suffers from much the same problem concerning everyone's favourite instrument in rock, electronics. As if the huge doses of pretentious concepts and Leto's awful lyrics aren't enough, more than half of LLF+D features these new, crazy ideas from the band and they rarely ever work. Leto's voice is hardly what it once was (see “End of All Days” for his rather cringe-worthy attempt at soulful vocals, or “Depuis Le Début” for some “rawness” in what sounds like a demo vocal take) and the band aren't exactly the most technically proficient musicians on the block. But what truly pushes this album below the “middle-of-the-road” marker is the near all-encompassing pervasion of songs that are just plain boring.

To start off with the truly horrendous, the album's two singles “Conquistador” and “Up in the Air” are the worst gift that 30STM has presented us thus far. “Conquistador” sounds like a watered-down version of This is War's title track, which was hardly a stunner in the first place, while “Up in the Air” features what sounds like an unused gang-vocal take from This is War over badly-realised synth parts. Thankfully, these two songs and “The Race” - which essentially completes the trio of terrible tracks on here, and will probably enjoy a single release in the not-too-distant future due to its upbeat and “inspiring” nature – are the worst that we are offered on LLF+D. The majority of the other tracks slip in one ear and out the other without making much of an impression. Some are slightly better or worse; see the over-long but still enjoyable “City of Angels” or the reasonably well-realised indie jaunt of “Bright Lights” for the better, alongside the failed ballad “End of All Days” or the yawn-worthy “Northern Lights” for the worse. But for the most part, the album firmly plants itself in mediocrity, and rarely compromises to be either better or worse. But whereas the aforementioned Unholy Trio are a definitive turn for the worse, there are undeniable glimpses of hopeful moments as well.

Although the electronic elements on Love Lust Faith + Dreams are for the most part ill-advised and unnecessary, there is one exception where they are used to a good effect. This song, “Pyres of Varanasi”, is also the album's highlight. A mostly instrumental piece (and let's be honest, a break from Leto's lyrics is welcome) with the exception of some vaguely tribal-sounding guest vocals, the song relies on a mixture of electronics and orchestral parts to complete its 3-minute runtime, and it remains enjoyable throughout. The electronics aren't overused or annoying but instead well-executed to add atmosphere and flow to the song, and it's definitely for the better. Sadly, the other “best parts” of LLF+D amount to a respectable two minutes each, and serve as both intro and interlude to the album. “Birth” is a surprisingly effective opener, with its dramatised marching-band aesthetic that manages not to wear thin alongside Leto's best vocal performance on the album. “Convergence”, meanwhile, is a rather happy-sounding and simplistic two-minute break from the rest of the album. Although under normal circumstances, these three standout tracks would probably be considered filler, they become the highlight of an album like Love Lust Faith + Dreams.

In conclusion, this isn't perhaps the most cringe-inducing album ever made, and it has its surprising moments of clarity and vision. However, 30STM's insistence on quirky and pointless experimentation (a good example is the female voice that recurs throughout the album, saying “love”, “lust”, “faith” and, you guessed it, “dreams”) as well as mediocre songwriting and extreme pretentiousness keep them from realising their potential and living up to past material. And so, the band's downhill slope continues, with less and less hope for a return to form from the band in the future. But look on the bright side; we'll always have Leto's 8-and-a-half minute music videos to look forward to, right?

Citation :
One has to wonder what guitarist Tomo Miličević was really doing half the time while 30 Seconds to Mars recorded their latest album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams, because there’s really not a whole lot of guitar to speak of. It’s been replaced by synths, orchestral swells, and electronic percussion sounds (which begs the question of what drummer Shannon Leto was doing half the time, too). I guess they were busy fiddling with keyboards and drum machines, because I’m afraid 30STM’s latest album sees the band give way to the over-processed modern dance-pop sound instead of the straight-ahead alternative rock from their early days, or even the U2-inspired arena-rock from their last disc, 2009’s This Is War.

Jared Leto and company try so hard to be astronomically grandiose, to be the biggest band on the planet, to be some kind of rock messiahs, that it just ends up coming across as empty, contrived, and more than a little cheesy. This trend reared its head occasionally on This Is War, but I did like that album because I felt the grandiose ambitions didn’t completely overwhelm the quality of music. On Love Lust Faith + Dreams, the ambition has eclipsed everything else.

Little things irritate me about this record. It’s divided into four categories, based on the four names in the title of the disc. Okay, good enough. So then why is “End of All Days,” whose chorus finds Jared repeating “All we need is faith” over and over in his best Rhianna impression, found in the “Lust” section? Further down, we come across “Bright Lights,” which in its defense is probably one of the more solid songs, if we were forced to pick. Three tracks later a song comes along called “Northern Lights.” Bright lights, Northern lights… too many lights. It bugs me when track names are so similar, especially found so close together and not intended to complement one another.

Lead single “Up In The Air” sounds like a dancey Maroon 5 song… not that I have anything against Maroon 5, since they never claimed to be anything other than what they were. The aforementioned “End of All Days” sounds like a Rhianna piano ballad with Leto’s voice instead of Rhianna. The interlude-esque “Pires of Varanasi” brings in some world music touches along with orchestra dirges ripped straight from The Dark Knight Rises soundtrack… it might be cool if it wasn’t so cheesy. “Do or Die” is an okay song, probably one of the better ones, although the main riff sounds very similar to “Night of the Hunter” from This Is War.

Almost every song utilizes a four-on-the-floor quarter-note bass drum pulse, giving almost every track a dancey club feel, considering the bass drum is heavily processed every time. It’s as if 30STM pulled the classic “sell out” maneuver, changing their sound to suit the mainstream radio crowd, but the band members remain completely oblivious and think their music is the greatest gift to mankind that they could have possibly rendered. Okay, so Jared Leto’s voice is very impressive, as always, but his lyrics are so unimaginative, so pompously grandiose, that he comes across as a self-important rock star with a god complex.

If 30 Seconds to Mars had turned down the cheese factor, upped the humble factor, and focused more on inventive and exciting songwriting, Love Lust Faith + Dreams might have impressed me more as the follow-up to This Is War. Years ago, I read an article in which a bandleader complained that Jared Leto was just acting out the part of a rock star frontman. I didn’t agree at the time, thinking that those other bandleaders wouldn’t say that if Jared Leto wasn’t in fact a successful actor. Now, though, I’m starting to agree with that sentiment. It seems like 30STM is more focused on acting out the image and grandiose messages they wish to send, rather than the actual quality of music they’re putting out. Even if that’s totally not what they think, Love Lust Faith + Dreams certainly makes it come across that way.

the band's journey has taken them from fantastic, to great, to average, and finally to bad, which is the point at which we arrive with Love Lust Faith + Dreams.
Voilà, voilà...

The problem with the band's current music is their "willingness" (read arrogant determination) to experiment where no experimentation is necessary.

On est bien d'accord: pas nécessaire!

Getting the fans involved in the music and making the process more interactive is a great idea; however, loading up every single song, even acoustics (100 Suns) with enough gang shouting for a Wonder Years song is not.
Voilà, ça c'est dit!

“Conquistador” sounds like a watered-down version of This is War's title track, which was hardly a stunner in the first place, while “Up in the Air” features what sounds like an unused gang-vocal take from This is War over badly-realised synth parts

This song, “Pyres of Varanasi”, is also the album's highlight. A mostly instrumental piece (and let's be honest, a break from Leto's lyrics is welcome)

Who doesn't have it yet? Why not?

Citation :
Haven't bought it because this is NOT the same band I grew up loving and supporting. There's a difference between growing as a band and completely changing--for the worse, I might add.
Citation :
I think Mars really have forgotten their main idea about music. It isn't the music they did at the beginning, until "This is war". Sure, they have to grow as musicians, and the music has to change. But I always thought that Mars can do it better. And I can't believe that all the Echelon love the new album. Being an Echelon doesn't mean to endorse everything the guys do.
Citation :
because it's shit
Citation :
Congrats! It sucks! Totally following the "main stream" vibe. Not the 3STM you used to be. You all failed and should be ashamed of yourselves. #NeverAgain
Citation :
Used to be an awesome experimental rock band, now you just make dance tracks/popular chart music. What went wrong
Citation :
His velvet voice is still the same but the power of the song is the same as the power of a C-battery.
The disappointment came shortly after the thrill of expectation. A club hit for DJs practicing tantra slowly evolving into the disco of the 80s.
Sorry, but the beard was grown in vain. Do what you do best or die trying? Ironically there is a song Do or die, but Papa Roach definitely did better job with that name.
Citation :
Because it sort of sucks......... the old stuff is much better
Citation :
Can't get used to it... Sorry

This album sucks
I don't like it. No vocals I'm extremely disappointed

Me because it's terrible

Thirty Seconds to Mars
Love Lust
Faith & Dreams
Polydor / Capitol

Nothing if not well-connected, the Los Angeles trio Thirty Seconds to Mars are fronted by the singer and Hollywood actor Jared Leto, a player in such major movies as Fight Club and Girl, Interrupted. Having sold more than five million albums to date, music is clearly much more than the between-films hobby that the alt-rock act Dogstar ultimately was for Keanu Reeves, but to these ears there’s something oddly fabricated and hollow-sounding about TSTM.
Boasting a shadowy if substantial fan base that calls itself The Echelon, and their own motto (Provehito in Altum, which is said to mean “launch forth into the deep”), the group could almost be the product of a screenwriter’s pen, rather than a living, breathing rock band. They also seem to enjoy the kind of privileges that would be the stuff of fantasy for most acts. Love Lust Faith & Dreams was recorded in Europe, India and California, its first single Up in the Air was premiered in orbit 370 kilometres above Earth with the help of Nasa, and its cover art reproduces a work from Damien Hirst’s Spot Paintings series.
It’s disappointing, then, that the trio’s fourth album is the kind of portentous, woolly-thinking affair that gives concept albums a bad name.
It’s split into four different sections, and a female voice with all the charisma of an electronic call-queue recording announces each of its titular headings in turn. Beneath the garish, showy arrangements, there’s very little of substance, lyrically speaking. “Bright lights / big city / she dreams of love”, sings Leto at one point. He’s hardly stretching himself there.
Though songs such as Conquistador and The Race seem to aim for the kind of futuristic, neo-prog splendour of Matt Bellamy’s band Muse, they actually sound a tad dated, and this is unfortunate for a band whose moniker is reportedly a metaphor for the exponential growth of technology. Up in the Air, meanwhile, seems uncertain whether it wants to be an emo-rock stadium-filler or a Christina Aguilera-esque floor-filler, and is horribly, irredeemably, overwrought.
To be fair, Leto can certainly sing and his elder brother Shannon can drum, but the only decent melody here comes when the album closes with a musical box playing a snatch of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.
If you’re going to make a good concept album you have to have something to say, but Love Lust Faith & Dreams has nothing to say and an awkward way of saying it. The musical equivalent of a straight-to-video dud.
