The last thing fans who attended the 30 Seconds to Mars show
on Friday night expected to see was the rock and roll giants dressed
like they had just finished brunch and were headed to the tennis court.
That is, unless those fans follow Mr. Leto on Twitter, or religiously
check the 30 Seconds to Mars website, which announced their show in
Denver was going to be theme night, and everyone was to show up
Hampton's style. The band made it back to D-Town for the second tour
since releasing their Grammy award-winning album "This is War," but
according to some who had a chance to catch the band last time around,
things were a little bit different, and it wasn't just because of theme
night.
A fairly packed house was fully energized and ready to relive the
excitement of last May when the band absolutely stunned the audience
with a electric performance. But 30 Seconds seemed to lack the passion
brought before, and the set seemed to indicate that the band, or Leto
at the very least, was out of gas. This, combined with poor stage
lighting, and lengthy crowd interaction in between songs did not give
the show the fuel for a powerful rock show.
Middle Class Rut opened the show, and may have been credited as the
better act for the evening, although the crowd seemed unfamiliar with
their music, and was more than ready for a repeat of glory by 30
Seconds to Mars. Then Jared and company took the stage, posing for a
few moments in their hysterical preppy-styled clothes. The band played
all of their hits from both old and new albums, but it seemed that Leto
was more interested in hearing the crowd sing along that singing the
songs himself. There was no doubt the crowd loved the interaction,
with frequent stops between and during songs to get the crowd clapping,
cheering, and in the end joining Leto on stage for the encore where
they played their biggest hit, "Kings and Queens." A disappointing
night for fans hoping to see the kind of performance that has built the
bands reputation, but many still seemed to enjoy the chance to rock
with one of their favorite movie star rockers. — Josh Barrett
